Manchester United 1-0 Galatasaray

Old Trafford, Manchester

MATCH IN A SENTENCE: Galatasaray had a penalty shout waved away just moments after kick-off, and it took United only six minutes after the incident to take the lead—a narrow advantage they'd hold onto for the remainder of the match.

KEY MOMENT: Michael Carrick isn't known for his goalscoring, which is probably why he persisted in slicing the ball into the back of the net after being brought down in the area by Galatasaray goalkeeper Fernando Muslera.

Had Carrick merely fallen to the ground Muslera would have likely been sent off, but the Manchester United midfielder had other ideas and managed to put the ball into the back of the net as he hit the surface.

That he was in alone on Muslera at all was down to a good sequence of buildup that also involved Shinji Kagawa and Robin van Persie, but as it happened United wouldn't be able to replicate the feat over the remaining 83 minutes and, in fact, should feel fortunate that they came away with all three points.

FROM HERE: United will visit Liverpool on Sunday and will host Newcastle in the Capital One Cup on September 26. They'll host Tottenham three days later, and their next Champions League appointment at Cluj on October 2.

Galatasaray, unbeaten so far in the Turkish league, will host Akhisar Bele on Sunday and will travel to Orduspor on September 29. They'll host Portuguese side Braga in the Champions League on October 2.

DIFFERENCE MAKER: David De Gea. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has rotated his goalkeepers to start the season, but here's betting De Gea will be given the start at Liverpool on Sunday following his excellent display against Galatasaray. His spectacular double-save on Burak Yilmaz and Emre Colak in the 70th minute were worth at least two points to United.
