Mascherano extends deal with Barca

BARCELONA, July 27, 2012 (AFP) - Argentine international midfielder Javier Mascherano has extended his deal with Barcelona by two seasons through to June 2016, the club revealed on their website Friday.

Mascherano arrived from Liverpool two years ago, initially to play in deep midfield although more recently he has doubled in central defence.

The club praised Mascherano's commitment and said he had a "fundamental role in the dressing room"

Kagawa stars in United victory

Shanghai, July 26, 2012 (AFP) - New signing Shinji Kagawa scored his first goal for Manchester United and put in a man-of-the-match performance in the 1-0 friendly win Wednesday against a Shanghai Shenhua side missing Didier Drogba.
The Japanese attacking midfielder, who signed from Borussia Dortmund in a 17-million-pound deal last month, forced the ball home from 10 yards out in the 68th minute following a Bebe cross.
"Kagawa was man of the match and I thought he deserved that," said Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson, adding: "He took his goal well even though it was a deflection.
"Kagawa has settled in really well, he's going to be a really good player for us and I was really impressed with him tonight."
United are interested in Brazil international Lucas Moura and Ferguson confirmed he had not given up strengthening his squad.
"We have been trying all summer to add to our squad, we've got Kagawa and (Nick) Powell, we are working on one or two other things, but I have nothing to tell you in terms of confirmation whether any other players are joining us in this moment in time, but we are trying to add to our squad," he said.
Former Cerezo Osaka player Kagawa ran the show for United and came close to scoring in the 61st minute with a powerful low drive from just outside the box which Shenhua reserve keeper Qiu Shenjiong did well to save.
Rio Ferdinand, speaking after the match, also praised his new team-mate. "He's a very intelligent football player who gets into very good positions, and asks questions of his opponents, he's a very good acquisition for Manchester United," he said.
In the first half an under-strength Shanghai side lacking new man Drogba and Nicolas Anelka held their own and should have scored in the 43rd minute.
Midfielder Wang Shouting broke through the middle to put a ball over the top of Ferdinand, leaving Shenhua striker Joel Griffiths one-on-one with Anders Lindegaard.
However, the United keeper managed to deflect the Australian's shot over the bar.
The second half was a much more one-sided affair as United brought on Paul Scholes and Javier Hernandez, much to the delight of the 42,000 crowd.
However the pair both missed golden chances to score -- Scholes headed wide when it looked easier to find the net in the 77th minute and Hernandez narrowly failed to connect with a cross from the lively Bebe.
Ferguson paid tribute to Shenhua's tenacity and singled out keeper Qiu for praise.
"I think they were very well organised, particularly in the first half they were very quick to get to the ball and they made it difficult for us," he said.
"The goalkeeper made four very good saves in the second half, it could have been more but for his performance."
The crowd ironically chanted on several occasions for Shenhua owner Zhu Jun to enter the field of play.
Local media had reported the 46-year-old video game mogul was in Shenhua's playing squad for the match, having previously appeared for his team in a pre-season friendly with Liverpool in 2007.
However he did not take to the pitch this time.

Manchester United targets Brazil's Moura

MANCHESTER, United Kingdom, July 23, 2012 (AFP) - Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed his interest in Brazil international Lucas Moura.

But Ferguson denied a deal, reported to be £26million ($40.3m), had been agreed for the 19-year-old Sao Paulo winger, who is a member of Brazil's Olympics squad.

"It's not correct. We haven't reached an agreement for the player," Ferguson was quoted on Man United's website as telling a press conference in Shanghai on Monday.

"We've shown an interest but until such time as we get a deal agreed we can't say he's our player."

United have already boosted their squad this summer with 23-year-old Japan international midfielder Shinji Kagawa and teenager Nick Powell.

And Ferguson confirmed that the club are hoping to bring in more than one player before the start of the season.

"We've signed two players in the summer: Kagawa and Powell," he said. "We think they both have fantastic potential.

"At this moment we're looking at other options in terms of bringing other players in. We're not lying on our backsides doing nothing. We're trying hard to bring other players to the club."

Fergie confirms Manchester United bid for van Persie

LONDON, July 20, 2012 (AFP) - Sir Alex Ferguson confirmed on Friday that Manchester United have made a bid for unsettled Arsenal striker Robin van Persie.
Ferguson made his move for van Persie after the Netherlands international, whose current contract expires at the end of the forthcoming campaign, announced earlier this month that he would refuse to sign a new deal with the Gunners.
Premier League champions Manchester City and Italian giants Juventus have also expressed interest in van Persie, but Ferguson tried to steal a march on his rivals with a firm offer.
It is believed Arsenal rejected United's bid because they want at least £20 million ($31.2 million) for the 28-year-old, who scored 37 goals in all competitions last season and won both the Players' and Football Writers' Player of the Year awards.
"Obviously Arsenal have given out the fact that we've made a bid for him," Ferguson told MUTV.
"We try to keep business as close as possible to us until the moment we conclude a deal. There's no point talking about something that might not happen.
"There are other clubs interested in the player. We've shown an interest and that's where we're at at the moment."
Van Persie stunned Arsenal coach Arsene Wenger when he declared immediately after Euro 2012 that he wanted to leave the north London team because he felt the club's ambitions did not match his own.
That shock announcement prompted City and Juventus to start the chase for one of Europe's top strikers and United are now firmly in the hunt as well.
Arsenal were expected to announce on Friday whether van Persie would join them on their pre-season tour to Asia but later delayed the decision until Saturday, when they are due to leave the country.
It is widely believed Wenger will opt against including van Persie in a bid to avoid further acrimony.
The van Persie saga threatens to become a carbon copy of those that saw Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri sold to Barcelona and Manchester City respectively last year, even though Wenger was desperate to keep both players.

BPL TRANSFER RUMOURS: 19 July 2012

Manchester United remain keenly interested in Sao Paulo starlet LUCAS MOURA despite having had a trio of bids for the 19-year-old rejected by the Brazilian club.
A delegation of United officials, believed to be led by chief scout Jim Lawlor, met with the player's parents and agent on Tuesday to discuss a possible move (Marca Brasil). Sao Paulo have already turned down offers of €25 million, €33 million and €38 million from United and are thought to be holding out for a fee of approximately €44 million, given that they own just 80 per cent of the forward's playing rights.
Lucas, who has been likened to Botafogo legend and 1970 World Cup winner Jairzinho, is currently on £10,000 per week at Sao Paulo and would see his wage packet skyrocket if he moved to either United or Inter Milan, who also continue to be linked with the versatile forward.
United have also emerged as a rather surprising suitor for want-away Arsenal striker ROBIN VAN PERSIE (Mirror).  Manager Sir Alex Ferguson believes £20 million will be enough to secure the services of the Dutch striker, who is out of contract at Arsenal at the end of next season and will be turning 29 in August.
Juventus were initially thought to have the hottest interest in Van Persie but were unwilling to meet Arsenal's valuation. AC Milan are also poised to make a bid for the Gunners' skipper after selling Zlatan Ibrahimovic to Paris Saint-Germain earlier in the week.
Should they strike out on Van Persie, Milan will turn their attention to STEVAN JOVETIC, who scored 14 goals in 27 Serie A matches for Fiorentina last season.
Jovetic, 22, is a support striker but can also lead the line on his own when called upon. He has bagged nine goals for Montenegro in 20 international appearances.
Back in England, LUKA MODRIC did not participate in Tottenham Hotspur's first training session and merely shook a few hands at the club's Chigwell training complex before going on his way (Marca).
The 26-year-old playmaker is thought to be closing in on a €35 million move to Real Madrid, and the Spanish champions are so confident of his arrival they've already started planning his shirt number with David Beckham's number-23 the most likely option.
On Wednesday Dinamo Zagreb president  Zdravko Mamic claimed Modric, a former Dinamo player, had already been in contact with Madrid boss Jose Mourinho. Mamic's son Mario is one of Modric's representatives.

Berbatov ready to move on from United

LONDON, July 15, 2012 (AFP) - Dimitar Berbatov has said it would be "better for everyone" if he left Manchester United even though he wants to stay at the English Premier League giants.

The striker's four-year stay at Old Trafford appears to be coming to an end after he managed just 12 league appearances last term, scoring seven goals.

A year earlier he was the Premier League's equal top-scorer.

The Bulgarian, who cost United £30 million when he joined from top-flight rivals Tottenham, wants to see out the final year of his United contract but is fast giving up hope of remaining at Old Trafford.

And the Bulgarian international took to his Facebook page Sunday to voice his frustration.

"The truth is, I love this club, but I am not going to be useful to anyone if I am not playing," said the 31-year-old. "And I want to play, I want to help

"But for unknown reasons it's not going to happen, or my chances will be limited, so it's better for everyone if we say goodbye.

"If not, I am professional and I will keep doing everything I can to help my team and my team-mates, whenever I have opportunity to do so."

Reports have suggested United have put a price tag of £10 million on Berbatov, although the forward said manager Sir Alex Ferguson had told him the figure was half of that amount.

"Because I am tired of speculation, I am telling you this," wrote Berbatov.

"I read the papers and I see they say 10 million pounds is my price. I go and talk with Sir Alex, and he says to me 5 million. So who is telling the truth, what do you think??"

Berbatov has scored 48 league goals at United, helping them to two Premier League titles.

But his Old Trafford future has been in doubt since he was left out of the squad for the 2010-11 Champions League final against Barcelona at Wembley.

Last season he found himself behind Wayne Rooney and young strikers Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez in the pecking order, although he did score a hat-trick against Wigan on Boxing Day.

Ipoh Timor boleh ditawan

IPOH 15 Julai - Penasihat DAP, Lim Kit Siang bakal menghadapi tentangan hebat untuk mempertahankan kerusi Parlimen Ipoh Timor pada Pilihan Raya Umum Ke-13 berikutan terdapat pertambahan sokongan pengundi Cina di kawasan itu terhadap Barisan Nasional (BN).

Naib Presiden UMNO, Datuk Seri Mohd.

Hadir sama, Ketua UMNO Bahagian Ipoh Timur, Datuk Azian Osman, Speaker Dewan Undangan Negeri (DUN) Perak, Datuk.

"Pengundi Melayu, insya-Allah tiada masalah.

TRANSFER RUMOURS: 12 July 2012

Paris Saint-Germain are close to pulling off an incredible double signing. The Ligue 1 side, backed by the well-moneyed Qatar Investment Authority, have made a €62 million bid for AC Milan duo THIAGO SILVA and ZLATAN IBRAHIMOVIC and are hoping to have the transaction wrapped up by the weekend (Soccernet).

Mino Raiola, the agent for Sweden captain Ibrahimovic, met with PSG director Leonardo earlier today and the two sides are reported to have agreed a contract in principle (L'Equipe). Thiago Silva reached personal terms with PSG in June.---

The likely exit of Thiago Silva—largely thought of as one of the best centre-backs in the world—has reignited Milan's interest in Vasco da Gama defender DEDÉ. The towering 24-year-old was a vital cog in Vasco's Copa do Brasil win last season and has earned two caps for the senior Brazil side. He would be available for approximately €10 million (Corriere dello Sport).
---
PSG have also emerged as a late bidder for Tottenham Hotspur midfielder LUKA MODRIC—a transfer target of both Manchester United and Real Madrid (Guardian). Both sides have so far refused to meet Spurs £40 million valuation, however, and with PSG in a mood to flash the cash the Ligue 1 runners-up could well be considered favourites for the 26-year-old's signature.

Speculation of the French side's interest skyrocketed on Thursday when manager Carlo Ancelotti expressed his admiration of the Croatia international, saying, "I did not need to see him at the Euros to know how much talent he has. I knew his capabilities before. Now he has confirmed his high quality for those who did not know.
---
Manchester United are thought to be in the market for at least one more player and have made a £20 million bid for Sao Paulo prospect LUCAS MOURA (Mirror).

The offer is likely intended to test the waters as the Brazilian side values the 19-year-old at upwards of £30 million, but with the attacker widely seen to have underperformed last season the Red Devils are hoping Sao Paulo will be more receptive to doing a deal. Earlier this month Lucas hinted at a possible exit, saying, "I cannot guarantee that I will stay until the end of my contract."
--
Barcelona remain keenly interested in Athletic Bilbao's JAVI MARTINEZ even though negotiations for the player seen to have stalled (Marca). Athletic are holding firm on their €40 million asking-price and while the 23-year-old would be open to a move he would be less welcoming of the much higher taxes in the Catalan capital—taxes that would require Barcelona to significantly increase his wages to offset the more than double tax rate in Catalonia. Bayern Munich are also reportedly interested in Martinez, who can play both at the heart of the defense and in central midfield.
---
New Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers has little interest in keeping ANDY CARROLL at Anfield next season and is entertaining loan offers from at least three clubs. AC Milan, given the likely exit of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, were the first to express an interest in the 23-year-old striker, but West Ham and Newcastle have emerged as suitors as well.

At this point Liverpool are not interested in selling Carroll, for whom they paid £35 million in 2011. Given the player's poor goalscoring record since the move the club would come nowhere near recouping the fee paid to Newcastle.

Taarabt signs new deal with QPR

LONDON, July 11, 2012 (AFP) - Morocco midfielder Adel Taarabt signed a three-year contract extension with Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday.

Taarabt had been linked with a move to French club Paris St Germain last season and speculation about his future has continued during the close-season.

But the 23-year-old, who joined QPR from Tottenham in August 2010, has been persuaded to pledge his future to Mark Hughes's side.

"When I first arrived here I honestly thought it would be just for a short period but I love this club and the people here have really helped me and I am very happy to be here," Taarabt said.

"I had a tough start to the season last year, but I worked hard and I have really enjoyed it under Mark Hughes.

"The club is getting bigger and bigger, with a new training ground and talk of a new stadium is very exciting. In the time I have been here, QPR's ambition has changed.

"Last year the aim was to stay in the Premier League. We achieved this and now we want to progress and improve."

As well as signing a new deal, Taarabt has been handed the number 10 jersey at QPR -- worn previously by club legends like Stan Bowles and Rodney Marsh.

"This means a lot to me personally," he said. I know '10' is very important at QPR. Special players like Bowles and Marsh have worn this.

"The club told me that the fans want me to have this shirt."

Taarabt has made 123 appearances for QPR in all competitions, scoring 29 goals, and helping the club establish themselves in the Premier League after winning promotion in 2011.

Shelvey signs new Liverpool contract

LONDON, July 10, 2012 (AFP) - Liverpool's young midfielder Jonjo Shelvey signed a new contract with the Premier League club on Tuesday.

Shelvey has made only 37 appearances in all competitions since joining from Charlton in May 2010, but new Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has handed the 20-year-old an extended deal.

Shelvey, who was on loan at Blackpool last season before returning to the Reds and making 16 appearances, admits he is already enjoying life under Rodgers.

"I am really happy. Last season I was itching to try and push for a new contract. Now it's happened and I am ready to kick on again now," he said.

"It's lovely to know I am in the plans for the future. At the moment, it's just about getting things right each day and proving myself to the gaffer here.

"His way of playing will suit me down to the ground and hopefully I can be in his plans.

"I think he's great. With all the passing drills he's doing, he's encouraging us to play all the time.

"Instead of doing a lot of long-distance running and things like that in pre-season, everything has been with a ball, which is more enjoyable."

Japan's Kagawa heads to Man United

TOKYO, July 10, 2012 (AFP) - Japanese midfielder Shinji Kagawa on Tuesday left his home country for Britain to join Manchester United, vowing to secure a starting slot when the Premier League season kicks off in August.

"It is a big challenge for me. I have nothing but a positive mind now," the 23-year-old told reporters ahead of his departure on a flight from Osaka in western Japan.

"I want to fight with confidence," he added.

Kagawa, on a four-year deal from German champions Borussia Dortmund, is to attend a team practice and hold a news conference in Britain on Thursday.

Kagawa, having been ruled out of the Olympic football tournament in London, is set to feature in United's pre-season tour of South Africa and China.

"First, I want to display what I have at the training camp and prepare myself so that I can firmly gain a position in time for the opening game," Kagawa said.

The Japanese player's arrival is expected to be a boost for United, who were within minutes of retaining their Premier League title last season until a late winner on the final day for Manchester City in a 3-2 win over Queens Park Rangers saw their cross-town rivals crowned champions instead.

Kagawa helped Dortmund land successive German titles and scored 17 goals as they completed a domestic double last season.

Bayern dismiss Pirlo move

BERLIN, July 9, 2012 (AFP) - Bayern Munich on Monday dismissed speculation they are about to sign Italian international playmaker Andrea Pirlo from Juventus.

According to Italian press reports, the Bundesliga club have made a 10-million-euro offer for the 33-year-old who is under contract with Juve until 2014.

"Bayern have neither made an offer to Juventus nor had contact with the player and his advisors," Bayern chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said in a statement.

Pirlo impressed during the recent Euro 2012 tournament in which Italy beat England on penalties to advance to the semi-finals before falling 4-0 to Spain in the final.

BPL TRANSFER RUMOURS: 07 July 2012

LUKA MODRIC wants his future sorted within the next 10 days. The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder is a transfer target of both Real Madrid and Manchester United and would like any transaction to be completed by the time Spurs begin pre-season training on July 18 (Marca). The London side, who missed out on the Champions League after Chelsea won the European Cup last season, are thought to want €40 million for the 26-year-old—a valuation that continues to put off potential suitors. But Madrid are so keen to sign Modric that they have already started thinking about his shirt number, with David Beckham's 23 the most likely option.

Manchester United are likely to go on a bit of a selling spree over the next few weeks, and a day after EZEKIEL FRYERS left the club for Spurs it looks as though JI-SUNG PARK could be on his way to Queens Park Rangers (Reuters). Park, 31, has made no more than 17 Premier League appearances for the Red Devils the last three seasons and with Rangers dangling £5 million for his signature United will likely be more than happy to show the former South Korea captain the door. QPR have already signed United left-back FABIO on a season-long loan and both ANDERSON and DIMITAR BERBATOV could be exiting Old Trafford this summer as well.

Tottenham Hotspur are set to renew their pursuit of Internacional striker LEANDRO DAMIAO (Mirror). The 22-year-old is considered to be one of the top young forwards in Brazil and his club may now cash in on him after signing Diego Forlan earlier in the week. Damiao, 22, has scored 19 goals in 28 matches so far this season and will be part of the Brazil squad at the upcoming London Olympics. He has scored one in nine senior internationals, against Ghana last September.

Still at Spurs, a prospective move for Ajax defender JAN VERTONGHEN has hit the rails due to a dispute between the defender and his club (Daily Mail). The 25-year-old Belgium international has made no secret of his desire to join Tottenham this summer but believes he is entitled to a portion of the £9 million fee the London side have agreed to pay for his signature. Ajax disagree, and the spat is threatening to derail the transaction altogether.

Juventus are planning to make ROBIN VAN PERSIE the most expensive player in the history of the club (Telegraph). The Serie A giants have prepared a wage packet worth £200,000 per week in an attempt to lure the want-away Arsenal striker but are unlikely to pay more than £15 million for a player entering the final year of his contract. Manchester City would be willing to pay upwards of £20 million for the 29-year-old, but with the wage bill at Eastlands already inflated the club would be hesitant to match the money Juventus have put on the table.

The spectre of Van Persie's exit has THEO WALCOTT reconsidering his future at Arsenal (Daily Mail). The 23-year-old is out of contract at the end of next season and has yet to open negotiations over a new deal at Emirates Stadium. Chelsea are thought to be interested in the winger, and Liverpool are kicking tires as well. Arsenal players have fled the club in droves the past few summers in search of silverware and if Van Persie leaves in the next few weeks it's likely the mass exodus will continue.

LUUK DE JONG's move to Borussia Monchengladbach is on the rocks after his current club, Twente, suddenly increased his valuation (Goal). It's believed Twente initially agreed to sell the player for a fee worth €14 million, conditional on De Jong's waving of his 20 per cent share of the fee. The forward agreed to waive the 20 per cent but after it appeared a deal with Monchengladbach was completed Twente stalled on the terms and re-priced the player at €20 million. De Jong says the new valuation is "inconsistent" with the talks previously held between Twente and Monchengladbach.
