Van Persie stars as United beats Southampton 3-2

SOUTHAMPTON, England (AP) Robin van Persie scored two late goals Sunday to complete his hat trick in a 3-2 win for Manchester United at Southampton in the Premier League and make amends for failing to score from an earlier penalty.

The Netherlands striker struck in the 87th minute and the second minute of added time to prevent last season's runner-up from losing its second match in the opening three rounds of this campaign.

Southampton led 1-0 through Rickie Lambert's 16th-minute header. Van Persie equalized eight minutes later, taking advantage of a slip by a defender to rifle the ball into the net.

Morgan Schneiderlin restored Southampton's lead in the 55th. Van Persie's weakly chipped penalty was saved in the 69th, but made amends with a tap-in and a header with time almost up.
